Burn Injury

Burn injuries cause both psychological and physical damage to more than 2 million Americans every year, leaving scars that could last a lifetime. Even after successful reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation, burn victims often suffer serious symptoms that stay hidden from view.

Seeking compensation from those responsible may feel like a burden, but you’re entitled to a payout that will help make your life whole again. If you or a loved one are suffering from a burn injury, now is not the time to give up—it’s time to choose an attorney who’s ready to fight.

What are some of the consequences of burn injuries?

Besides the obvious physical damage, burn injuries take a heavy toll on their victims due to:

  • Emotional and physical trauma
  • Pain—which is sometimes constant
  • Internal organ damage
  • Increased temperature sensitivity
  • Stress on personal relationships
  • Self-esteem loss

Close friends and family of the victim will also have their lives changed drastically, as burn victims often need round-the-clock medical care, financial support and more.

What types of burn injuries are there?

There are four main kinds of burns:

  • Thermal burns: caused by contact with steam, fire, hot liquids and other sources of high heat
  • Light burns: caused by ultraviolet light or sunlight
  • Chemical burns: caused by an alkali or acid, or chemical explosions
  • Radiation burns: caused by nuclear radiation

In addition, there are three categories of severity for burns:

  • First-degree burns: only the top-most layer of skin is damaged, causing redness and minor inflammation. Can usually be treated with cool water and aloe vera gel, and usually heal within a week
  • Second-degree burns: feature damage that extends beyond the top layer of skin, often with blisters, that may take weeks to heal
  • Third-degree burns: with damage that may extend to bones and internal organs, characterized by charring. They can cause permanent nerve damage and even death. Generally, they can take several years to heal.

What kind of compensation are burn victims entitled to?

As a victim’s recovery continues, you and your family will be faced with mounting costs associated with:

  • Medical bills
  • Job retraining
  • Income loss
  • Both physical and emotional suffering

Burn injuries can be extremely costly to treat, and even small first-degree burns can become infected and require medical treatment.

You don’t need to suffer in silence. If someone is at fault for your burn injury, you deserve compensation to return your life to normalcy.
